Omega has started the one-year countdown until the commencement, released the Seamaster Planet Ocean PyeongChang 2018 Limited Edition to commemorate the occasion. Omega has been the official timer of the Olympics since 1932 and continues to innovate in the arts of high-speed and high-intensity timing, and I am sure the Winter Olympics will give us another chance to see Omega push the envelop. I know what you’re thinking. Gold? For a dive watch? Why? First of all, you’re right, gold is a ludicrous choice for a dive watch – but Panerai knows this. And so do all of the other watchmakers that have made gold divers (a long list that includes Cartier, IWC, and and even Rolex). So while you have every right to question why this watch is needed, it's good to keep in mind that for a few decades now, since the introduction of Quartz technology and in the diving world, of computers, it’s a question most mechanical watches face. About a year ago, my father surprised me with a wristwatch that I never knew existed, even though it had been in our family for generations. Now you may be thinking it's a little odd that it took this long for me to find out about this watch, given my very pronounced interest in wristwatches (not to mention my career choice). And it was. But I'm guessing my father, who inherited it when he was a young boy, wanted to find the right time to share it, and I'm very glad he did. Suffice it to say, even if this isn't a watch that would seem precious to most, it's exactly that to me.

Since 1866, the Horological Society of New York (HSNY) has been working diligently to advance the art and science of horology through its popular educational programs. Its monthly lecture series features world-class experts and is now being recorded as videos for members to watch online. Its award-winning Horological Education classes have taught thousands of students in NYC and in 2016 began touring across the USA. Today, HSNY is introducing the Henry Fried Scholarship, with a goal to increase the number of students studying at full-time watchmaking schools in the USA.

We already showed you the best everyday watches we found at this year's SIHH, along with the best ladies' watches. Now it's time for the crazy stuff. These are the timepieces of which horological dreams are made, some a little more attainable than others. Get ready to have your mind blown.

Jean Todt, the man who delivered 14 Formula One World title to Ferrari and the current boss of the International Automobile Federation (known as the FIA), has been affiliated with Richard Mille since 2013 when the company released the RM-036 Tourbillon G-Sensor Jean Todt. Well, now Todt has three new Richard Mille watches bearing his name, made to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his entry into professional motorsports. There’s a common color scheme running through the new collection, but each of these is very distinct when it comes to capabilities and availability. Let's take a look at them one-by-one.

How far are watch collectors willing to go for an early Philippe Dufour Simplicity? At the very least, that’s the question Silas Walton and his team are hoping to answer this week. The British watch dealer, who has a knack for finding rare pieces that have never been offered online, will be testing collectors' resolve once gain by giving them a chance to skip waiting lines and to dodge auction battles to buy what many consider to be one of the finest timepieces ever made. If they have $250,000 to spare, that is.

Jaeger-LeCoultre was one of the most talked about brands at SIHH this year, with the release of the stunning (and surprising!) sector dial additions to the Master Control collection. However, there was another collection updated this year that you may have missed, the Rendez-Vous collection. Now, I am kind of a Reverso gal through and through, but I was rather impressed with the new Rendez-Vous Night & Day Large, especially in stainless steel.

The pre-Baselworld releases are starting to roll in and we just received an exciting one from our friends at Chanel. Last year Chanel caused quite a stir when the brand dropped the Monsieur de Chanel, which was its first men's watch with an in-house produced movement (the Caliber 1), with a little help from Romain Gauthier, who produced some of the parts like the wheels. Not only was the watch impressive mechanically, but also aesthetically. The watch made several HODINKEE team members' lists for their favorite watches at the fair and it was well-received by fashion and watch lovers everywhere. This year Chanel is giving us another Monsieur de Chanel, this time a limited edition with a platinum case and a sleek black dial.

You get a general sense in reading about, and/or interacting with, the Swiss watch industry that despite the ups and downs that are an inevitable part of any business, some folks at least are doing well for themselves. And you'd be right; some folks are doing well for themselves. Very, very well, in fact.

This Sunday is Super Bowl 51 and it will be the New England Patriots (again) duking it out with the Atlanta Falcons on one of the biggest stages in sports. Yesterday, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady participated in a press conference in Houston, Texas, where the game is being held, and on his wrist was the always-controversial TAG Heuer Connected Watch.
