IntroducingThe Doxa Sub 200 'Dune'

Made with the brand's longtime retail partner, Art of Time, the watch leans into sandy Caribbean vibes in more ways than one.

What We Know

If your mind immediately equates summer with sand, Doxa has a new limited edition release that will be right up your alley. Made in collaboration with their longtime retail partner Art of Time, a family-owned jeweler in Philipsburg, St. Maarten, the new 100-piece limited edition Sub 200 "Dune" features a dial in textured sand-grain finish in warm taupe or bronze, with matching beige Super-LumiNova indices and a black unidirectional luminous sapphire bezel with beige accents.

The watch is built on the same platform as the rest of the brand's Sub 200 releases, with a stainless steel case that measures 42mm by 13.8mm and houses an automatic Sellita SW-200 with 38 hours of power reserve. The watch has a 200m water resistance, making it capable for most divers. On the caseback, the brand has gone "Caribbean" in a different way, as a nod to one of their iconic colorways and the region that inspired it. The solid steel screw-down caseback features a laser-engraved map of the Caribbean, with the sea finished in a vivid deep blue using laser-induced oxidation. The brand points out that this positions the watch between sand and sea.

Each of these limited edition Sub 200 'Dune' examples is individually numbered (out of the total of 100 being made) and includes both a stainless steel beads-of-rice bracelet and a black rubber strap. The retail price is $2,090, and it will only be available through Art in Time.

What We Think

I won't spill too much ink about a dial iteration, but my immediate reaction to the press package was that this struck me not so much as even a sand-inspired release but a fun way to emulate the kind of erosion that can happen to vintage patinated dials. It's much less forced in that regard than some other releases from other brands. As a way to represent sand, it's much more literal than the Ming 37.08, but that's not a bad thing either. The caseback is a nice touch as well, though it doesn't necessarily move the needle for me. One last thing to note is that you're looking at around a $1,000 premium over a standard Sub 200 (nearly double the price), but this is a limited edition of just 100 pieces with a unique dial we've not seen before.
