What We Know
Le Mans Classic returns this summer to the French countryside for its biennial celebration of the historic race cars that once battled through motorsport's most grueling endurance test. The 12th edition of Le Mans Classic runs from July 3 to 6, with around 750 classic race cars lapping the Circuit de la Sarthe as many times as possible in 24 hours, in six different categories ("grids") — one for each of the major eras of automobiles of the past 24 Hours of Le Mans series from 1923 through to 1981. I forgot to put it on my schedule to try to visit this year, and my biennial reminder came (yet again) from a press release from Richard Mille about their tenth collaborative release since 2008. This time, it's the brand's automatic watch with declutchable rotor, the RM30-01 Le Mans Classic.
Two years ago, Richard Mille released the RM 72-01 Flyback Chronograph to celebrate the eleventh running of this iconic race. This year's commemorative model is somewhat simpler and more visually reserved than its predecessor. It maintains the green and white colorway of the race, featuring orange and green accents, and a green and white checkerboard finish around the big date window at 4 o'clock. The watch also features a titanium front bezel and rear caseback frame, sandwiching a green Quartz TPT midcase that matches the green rubber strap.
The Calibre RMAR2 has been modified with a new 24-hour counter, which features a green-shaded "16" numeral referencing the green flag start time of the endurance race. The sapphire caseback features a logo of the Le Mans Classic that partially obscures part of the rear view of the movement. However, the titanium bridges and skeletonized baseplate are visible, while the front side features a 55-hour power reserve indicator shaped like a section of a racetrack. When the power reserve is full, the rotor declutches to prevent more winding. The clutch engagement indicator at 11 o'clock shows the owner whether the rotor is operating in the winding phase (on) or is disengaged (off). The pusher at the 2 o'clock position allows the user to choose the crown function between hand-setting, date-setting, or winding.
The RM30-01 Le Mans Classic measures 42mm by 49.9mm and is 17.59mm thick, with a 50m water resistance rating. It is limited to 150 pieces and has an undisclosed price.
What We Think
Richard Mille feels most at home to me when it's tied to motorsport. It is also a brand that should (and often does) lean into the "loud" nature that makes it what it is, whether people like it or not. For example, I randomly bumped into someone wearing the last Le Mans Classic release shortly after it came out, and it was one of those watches that surprised me and made me smile to see in person. Sometimes, it's just cool to see rare and bold things.

From pictures, the new RM30-01 Le Mans Classic looks a bit more tame in comparison, which also makes it a bit more legible. When I first saw the email hit my inbox (before I read anything), my initial reaction was, "Wouldn't it be cool if they did something that had functionality with the 24-hour race?" Well, the request was answered. I think this is the "Goldilocks" of their recent Le Mans Classic releases, though in an ideal world, I'd love to compare all the last three in person. If anyone out there has all three, please reach out!
