IntroducingThe Albishorn Marinagraph — An 'Imagined Vintage' Watch Combining The Best Of A Skin Diver and Regatta Timer

Part skin diver, part regatta timer, whole lotta fun.

What We Know

Summer might be winding down, but Albishorn (a brand whose entire ethos is designed around imagining vintage watches that never existed) thinks there's still enough time to head out on the water. Whether to race in a sailing regatta or strap on fins and grab the snorkel to go diving, the new Albishorn Marinagraph covers both bases. This is a two-in-one watch that draws inspiration from vintage skin diver design and features a creative interpretation of the 10-minute countdown function of a regatta timer.

The new Albishorn Marinagraph is available in two colors: "Classic Racing," featuring a sunburst black dial with applied silver indexes filled with white Super-LumiNova, and "Paraíba Racing," which has a Sunburst Paraíba tourmaline green dial and applied black indexes filled with white Super-LumiNova. The dial and hands have been shaped in homage to the brand's mountain emblem, while the logo has been updated to reflect how the company imagines it would have evolved to match the time period of the late 1950s/1960s.

The dials are punctuated by a red chronograph hand and an unusual and creative addition. In addition to moving the "running" indicator to 3 o'clock on the dial, the watch now features a 10-minute retrograde countdown to time the start from the 10-minute warning at a regatta (although the Olympics use 6 and 3-minute warning blasts).

Now, let's talk about the bezel. Tension-fit and bi-directional, it's not marked for actual diving use (so again, it's more for a snorkeler) but instead has a 24-hour tide indication. The bezel is divided into two segments covering 24 hours. There are white markers, filled with Super-LumiNova, which denote the first 12 hours following the last high tide. Red markers show the subsequent 12 hours. This allows the user to not only track the full 24-hour tidal cycle but also to estimate the relative tide height at any given hour.

The watch retains the unusual "destro" monopusher design, powered by an automatic proprietary caliber ALB01 A that is COSC-certified and has 64 hours of power reserve. The watch is cased in stainless steel, measuring 39mm in diameter by 13mm thick, with a 47.7mm lug-to-lug, and features 100m of water resistance. The flared concave bezel measures a bit wider at 42.7 mm. The watches come on a variety of rubber straps paired with each release.

They both go on sale on Friday, August 29, at 9am Eastern on the brand's website with a price of CHF 3,950, exclusive of taxes and shipping.

What We Think

We've had a decent bit of coverage of Albishorn on the site recently. My "Hands-On" with the Albishorn Type 10 seemed to go over well with folks in the audience, so I thought people would appreciate being aware of this updated take on the chronograph design. But the fact that the brand went beyond just a dial color change is proof enough that Albishorn isn't going to rest on the laurels of a few good releases. It's pretty cool that the brand has created a new design within an existing platform, packed with creative and elegant "solutions" to a variety of problems faced on the water.

I love vintage regatta timers. It's a fun niche you could collect until you were blue in the face, but the retrograde indication is a new one for me. It's incredibly creative, but that's no surprise. Trust me when I say that founder Sébastien Chaulmontet has numerous creative ideas. He'll often throw them out in casual conversation, and then a short time later, he'll have the practical working design of how he could pull it off. The "Paraíba Racing" version might be a bit loud for me, but I could see the "Classic Racing" version being a legitimate, practical watch if you actually wanted to take the watch out for a real regatta. That's not something you can say about a lot of "creative" and funky timing tools.
