What We Know
Marathon Watch is a truly international watchmaker. The 85-year-old company, based in Canada, manufactures and assembles its watches in Switzerland at its facilities in La Chaux-de-Fonds. At the same time, its biggest customers are government agencies, including U.S. government divisions such as the military. But today is Canada's birthday, and the brand is leaning heavily into its home country roots, offering a limited-edition Canadian heritage moment with the ADANAC Stainless Steel Navigator Pilot's Automatic.
Canadians are generally subdued when it comes to flag-waving. These, however, are not subdued times, and the ADANAC is about as patriotic a timepiece as one could expect to see from your quiet neighbours to the North. It's a bit of a bizarro, upside-down world at the moment, one where the name of a watch model can be reversed to reveal its cultural origin. Happy ADANAC Day!
But first, some cross-border history for this capable tool watch. The first Marathon Navigator was an electronic quartz watch designed for pilots, released in 1986, and was made in partnership with Kelly Air Force Base in Texas. This version is less San Antonio and more Saint John. On the arctic white dial sits a red Maple Leaf front and (top) centre, the same found on the flag which debuted 60 years ago today.
The red unidirectional, 12-hour GMT bezel allows you to track another time zone, such as Vancouver, if you're in Halifax and need to know what time it is for friends and family on the West Coast, and when to wish them Happy Canada Day! The surgical 316L stainless steel case measures 41 millimeters in diameter, and the lug-to-lug distance of 48 millimeters makes it wearable and accessible to all. At 11.5 millimeters thick, it's got the right size for a mosaic of different wrists rather than a melting pot. The standard lug size of 20 millimeters opens up a whole world of strap options to welcome home to your wrist if you pick up one of the 500 limited editions.
The Marathon Limited Edition ADANAC Stainless Steel Navigator Pilot's Automatic is available now. It is limited to 500 pieces and retails for $1280.
What We Think
Flag waving on watches is rarely done with style and grace, but this isn't so much a wave as it is a tip of the chapeau to the mighty Maple Leaf. It's a national symbol that has helped keep Canada and its diverse and dispersed population together through numerous challenges over the past 60 years. With a proven automatic movement and case design that has persisted for nearly four decades, the ADANAC Navigator could likely see you through the next 60 years. It'll stand on guard for thee.
