Quick Take
The Kalpa Hebdomadaire is a watch with a very special place in Parmigiani Fleurier's collections – it was the company's first tonneau shaped movement. Launched in 1998, it's been a mainstay ever since, and the latest version is a classic presentation of the eight-day movement in the Kalpa case.
Why This Watch Matters
While this is not a major technical innovation a la the new Kalpa Chronor or Kalpagraphe Chronometre, it is a solid, sober addition to the existing lineup of Kalpa Hebdomadaire watches. The movement is one of the few in-house tonneau (barrel) shaped calibers in modern watchmaking, and offers an 8 day power reserve ("hebdomadaire" means weekly, from the Greek hebdomas, meaning seven, or a group of seven things). It also has a very lyrical design, which gives a lot of scope for the exercise of traditional movement finishing techniques.
Initial Thoughts
The Kalpa case has always been something of a love-it-or-hate-it design for Parmigiani; I personally find it appealing, especially in company with the eight-day caliber PF110. You have to have somewhat idiosyncratic tastes to enjoy it, and of course like any non-round watch it's always going to be something of a niche offering, but between the overall design and the very attractive movement, this newest Hebdomadaire should be quite attractive to anyone looking for an off-the-beaten-path, technically interesting watch from an haut de gamme watch manufacturer.
