What We Know
Brew Watch Co. just launched its smallest watches ever with the Metric Lite trio. Considering that the Metric was already very compact in the space at 36mm, these three new watches in a 30mm case size are objectively tiny while still preserving the line's familiar identity to microbrand enthusiasts.
When it comes to dial options, the steel case features both a deep, glossy black dial and a more playful mother-of-pearl dial, while the gold PVD case is paired with a black dial for a classic combination. As always, the coffee bean motif comes stamped in intaglio on the dial. This all sits in the case, complete with a flat-link "integrated style" bracelet and a notched crown.
Though a quartz movement may have been expected, Brew actually powers the Metric Lite with an automatic Miyota 6T27 movement, complete with sapphire caseback. Designed for small watches, the caliber beats at 28,800 VpH and offers a power reserve of 40 hours. While there isn't any decorative finishing for the movement, which is understandable at this price point, the signed rotor with "BREW" displayed prominently is a nice, customized touch.
The Metric's cushion case design remains the same, with all variations made from stainless steel, and the gold model featuring a PVD coating. Measuring 30mm in diameter, with a 34mm lug-to-lug and a case height of 10.5mm, these are small watches. But flat they are not, as the dials continue to preserve the dimensionality of a deep rehaut with polished "mountain-top" applied indices and dotted lume pips around the dial.
The Brew Metric Lite is available now, with all three variations priced at $375.
What We Think
Brew has closely followed a very successful formula over the past few years, with many of the most significant changes coming in the form of smaller design tweaks and improvements. But, surprisingly, a change in case dimension feels remarkably impactful in the context of the brand's history, and I'm here for it. Now, it's impossible to talk about this launch without acknowledging that the Metric Lite comes in the wake of the trend of miniaturization seen across many of the big brands — the first thing that came to mind was the trio of Royal Oak Minis from last year — and the Metric Lite certainly feels a bit trendier and fashion-forward than many of Brew's other designs.
At the $375 price point, the Metric Lite now offers the primary contender in the space for the smallest wrists, featuring a fun and unisex design. It's been a challenge whenever someone who is used to wear a thin bracelet or a tiny quartz vintage watch asks me for a recommendation in the modern space, and this basically sits in that perfect niche for a watch that is very much design-driven yet checks off a lot of the boxes for owning a shiny new mechanical watch.
